The Caveman was started in 1981 as the Can-Am by three Canadians and three Americans at the Siam Country Club, a 40-player event that was held to reciprocate golf hospitalities extended by more well established Thai, Scandinavian and UN golf associations. The inaugural event promoted a North American image – Canadian and American sourced prizes, beer and wine, and a post-game menu of hot dogs, hamburgers and baked beans.

The name has changed over the years and has grown to 128 players drawn from a multi-national field of business people, but it retains its core values of:

  • deliver great value and benefits to sponsors and players alike
  • run a memorable, fun, 5-star event
  • donate the lion’s share of the net proceeds to a charitable cause.

The Charity: Operation Smile Thailand

Operation Smile was founded in 1982 in the Philippines by plastic surgeon Dr. William Magee, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, a nurse and clinical social worker with a mission to repair children’s cleft lips and cleft palates.

Operation Smile Thailand conducted its first mission at two centres in 1997, providing free surgeries to 172 Thai children, and in September 2001, Operation Smile Thailand was registered with the Office of the National Culture Commission of Thailand.  Today, Operation Smile thailand conducts an average of 10 surgical missions per year and in the last few years has performed more than 7,000 free surgeries for children in Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.

The Caveman Classic is proud to support this worthwhile cause and we encourage you to learn more their great work at https://operationsmile.or.th/
