19 October Current and ex-NHLer to play in Bangkok hockey tourney Oct 23-27
Johnny Oduya, of the Chicago Black Hawks, and Vesa Toskala, the former number one goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs, are set to lace up the blades in Bangkok next week in the 18th annual Land of Smiles Ice Hockey Classic. Action will take place on the 5th floor of the Imperial Samrong rink (across from Sukhumvit 113), and the Grand Central Rama IX Mall “Rink” on the 7th floor. Oduya was part of the deal that sent Ilya Kovalchuk to the New Jersey devils On February 4, 2010, he was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers along with Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier and a 1st round draft pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft for Ilya Kovalchuk and Anssi Salmela.
Hockey has blossomed in this steamy Southeast Asian nation despite the balmy Thai climate. Thirty-seven teams from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia will participate in this year’s tourney.
The always-competitive tourney will be even tougher as new squads and these current and ex-NHLers vie for the coveted hardware. The tournament will have four divisions: the International Open, the International Recreational, the Asian Open and the Women’s Open Division.
Featuring 600 players from around the world, the five-day ice hockey extravaganza will see teams from Russia, Latvia, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Canada, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates will battle it out on the ice.
Thailand’s host team – the Bangkok Flying Farangs – has spearheaded the tourney once known as the OK Cup since 1995.
