26 August Steve Cannon – Trumpeter
Forty-five year veteran of the trumpet, mastering many styles, Steve has performed and recorded in a wide variety of situations and with some of the music industry’s top names. Comfortable in any chair of the trumpet section, from a commanding lead player to a swinging jazz soloist, his tenure on the trumpet has provided him with an unmistakable sound and style, and an unusual level of versatility.
A native of Los Angeles California, Steve relocated to Portland Oregon in 1993 and quickly become one of the Pacific Northwest’s most sought after trumpet players, regularly appearing in a variety of situations, leading his own bands as well as in support of a long list of the music industry’s top names. His vast experience finds him playing everything from Latin salsa music to bebop jazz, ranging from local intimate restaurants and nightclub engagements to television and radio commercial recordings, and major concert appearances supporting an impressive list of internationally acclaimed recording artists, to include: Arturo Sandoval, David Sanborn, James Morrison, Delbert McClinton, Manhattan Transfer, Diane Schuur, composer and comedian Steve Allen, The Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown Big Band, Mary Wilson and the Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Spinners, Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons, and the Fifth Dimension.
While living in Los Angeles, Steve worked in the television and film industry with credits that include repeated appearances on such shows as the Tracy Ulman Show, Falcon Crest, Dynasty, and ABC’s Television Special “Story of a Mafia Wife” starring Melissa Gilbert, as well as soundtrack recordings for Public Broadcasting and countless commercial television and radio jingles.
As a recording artist, Steve has been involved in numerous CD projects supporting various artists but stepped into the spotlight with his own 1999 debut CD release entitled “Nowhere Man”, a smooth jazz style recording co-produced with acclaimed pianist and brother, Randy Cannon. More recently Steve has returned to his musical roots, leading a swingin’ Big Band that romps and roars behind him as he amazes audiences with his collective experience of over three decades as a professional entertainer. The award winning 2006 release of “Full Blown” by Steve Cannon and the Blow Hard Big Band continues to receive rave reviews. Named “2006 Best Album of the Year” by “All About Jazz” Magazine and a finalist in the 2007 International Independent Music Awards, the “Full Blown” recording also found Steve invited to Bangkok Thailand in January 2007 along with a list of legendary jazz musicians called the “Jazz Giants” for a command performance for His Majesty The King Of Thailand.
Residing in Bangkok Thailand since 2007, Steve has been regularly appearing at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel, leading his own quartet as well as appearances with his piano playing brother, Randy Cannon. Known throughout S.E. Asia as the premier jazz and commercial trumpet player, Steve also makes regular appearances and recordings with popular Thai artists such as Saxman Koh and Takeshi Band, Neung Jakkawal Band, ETC Band, and is called on frequently to perform with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.
